Territory to the Top
The Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct is a project with potential.
The 1500 hectare hub aims to unify a spectrum of industrial decarbonisation and low emissions efforts. Combined with marine and logistics infrastructure and proximity to international markets, it’s a perfect storm of productivity.
The intended result of the project?
A globally competitive, sustainable development precinct with the potential to utilise untapped natural gas reserves located onshore and offshore, as well as leverage existing assets in the area – Santos’ Darwin LNG and INPEX Ichthys LNG.
The precinct would feature diverse technologies and industries including carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, renewable energy, minerals processing and advanced manufacturing. Most significantly, meeting robust environmental regulations, the project accelerates progress on both the NT and national path to a thriving local decarbonised industry.
It is a tentpole project in the NT Government’s aspiration to grow the Territory economy to $40 billion by 2030.
Supported on both sides of politics, the Territory and Federal Government are working to fast-track development. The Federal Government allowed $1.5 billion multi-user infrastructure investment for the project in the recent budget.
NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles told the NT News that the Territory was in good hands.
“It’s really important for Territorians to understand we’ve got some of the most vigorous environmental protections and community impact legislation that we’ve worked through, and this will go through every assessment,” she said.
Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese said the project would create capacity and promote productivity.
“Investing in common user marine infrastructure at Middle Arm and regional logistic hubs will support the growth in regional decarbonised industries and resilient supply chains which will strengthen both the NT and National Economy”.
